اظهارنظر اخیر رجب طیب اردوغان، نخست‌وزیر ترکیه، علیه سقط جنین و سزارین خشم فعالان حقوق زنان را در این کشور برانگیخته است.

آقای اردوغان گفته است که "فرقی ندارد یک بچه را توی شکم مادرش بکشیم یا بیرون آن" و تاکید کرده است "به نظر من هیچ کس نباید حق انجام این کار را داشته باشد".

او همچنین گفته است با زایمان به شیوه سزارین مخالف است، چرا که آن را روشی "غیرطبیعی" می‌داند.

فاطمه شاهین، وزیر امور اجتماعی و خانواده در کابینه آقای اردوغان، نیز ضمن حمایت از نظر نخست‌وزیر درباره سقط جنین گفته است سزارین به هر حال "یک عمل جراحی است که سلامت مادر را به خطر می‌اندازد".
